After having legally resided in the Republic of Slovenia for a certain period of time (five years of continuous and lawful residence in the Republic of Slovenia on the basis of a temporary residence permit or evidence of the submitted application for the extension or issue of a further temporary residence permit, or evidence of the submitted application for the issue of the first temporary residence permit, which allows a foreigner to reside in the Republic of Slovenia during the decision period regarding their application for the first temporary residence permit), you shall be able to obtain a permanent residence permit, without any restriction on the duration and purpose of your stay.

Family members of a Slovenian citizen and family members of a foreigner who holds a permanent residence permit or refugee status in the Republic of Slovenia may be issued a permanent residence permit after two years of continuous and lawful residence in the Republic of Slovenia on the basis of a temporary residence permit. The time spent in the Republic of Slovenia for the purpose of studies and vocational training shall be considered half time. However, it does not count if you have resided in the Republic of Slovenia as a seasonal worker, posted worker, an intra-corporate transferee, a daily migrant worker or as a foreigner under temporary protection. Similarly, the time spent serving a sentence shall not be taken into account.

To be granted a permanent residence permit, you are requested to demonstrate that you possess sufficient means of subsistence, a clean criminal record, health insurance coverage, and a valid travel document.

ADDITIONAL CONDITION – IMPORTANT! Applications submitted from 1 November 2024 onwards shall be accompanied by a certificate demonstrating that one has successfully passed the Slovenian language test, reaching a basic level of proficiency in the Slovenian language (level A2).

Once you have been issued a permanent residence permit in Slovenia, you shall register your permanent residence with the administrative unit in the area where you live.

SPECIAL NOTICE!

At the time of deciding on your application for a permanent residence permit, you are to reside in the Republic of Slovenia on the basis of a temporary residence permit. In case you have not obtained a permanent residence prior to the expiry of your temporary residence permit, you shall also apply for an extension of your temporary residence permit, and such application shall be lodged with the competent administrative unit by the time your temporary residence permit has expired.
