As a person granted temporary protection in the Republic of Slovenia, you may be entitled to a special form of financial assistance following the death of a family member, also known as a death benefit. Below you can read more about this right, which is provided to eligible persons granted temporary protection by the Government Office for the Support and Integration of Migrants.

What is the special form of assistance following the death of a family member and who is it intended for?

The special form of financial assistance following the death of a family member is a one-off social assistance payment granted to a person granted temporary protection after the death of their family member in Slovenia who also held temporary protection status.

It is intended for socially vulnerable persons granted temporary protection whose financial situation may worsen or who may experience financial hardship as a result of the death of a family member.

What amount am I / are we entitled to and how is it granted?

The death benefit is granted as a one-off financial assistance payment in the amount of the basic minimum income. A family member of a deceased person granted temporary protection is entitled to the death benefit if, on the date of the family member’s death, they were entitled to financial assistance or the allowance. 

The benefit is granted and paid to the applicant as assistance for all family members of the deceased person.

The minimum income amount is adjusted in accordance with the cost of living in Slovenia. The current amount of the minimum income can be checked on the GOV.si website.

How is the death benefit paid?

The death benefit is normally paid into your bank account. In exceptional cases, it may also be paid in cash.

What conditions must I meet to claim the special form of assistance following the death of a family member?

You are eligible for the death benefit if you meet the following conditions:

  • You have been granted temporary protection status in the Republic of Slovenia.
  • Your deceased family member had the temporary protection status in the Republic of Slovenia at the time of death.
  • On the date of your family member’s death, you were entitled to the allowance or financial assistance.
  • No more than one year has passed since the death of your family member.

Who is considered a family member of the deceased person for the purpose of claiming the death benefit?

For the purpose of claiming the death benefit, the following persons are considered family members of the deceased:

  • the spouse or a person who lived with the deceased in a cohabiting partnership recognised by law as equivalent to marriage;
  • children and stepchildren;
  • parents, or a person who lives with one of the parents in a marriage or in a cohabiting partnership recognised by law as equivalent to marriage;
  • brothers or sisters, nephews or nieces, and grandchildren.

  • Filled in application
  • Proof of death (death certificate)

How does the procedure for claiming the death benefit work?

  1. Fill in the Application for Exercising the Right to the Special Form of Financial Assistance Following the Death of a Family Member and the Special Form of Financial Assistance to Help Cover Funeral Costs.
  2. Submit the required documentation to the Government Office for the Support and Integration of Migrants.
  3. The Office will issue you a decision confirming your entitlement to the death benefit.

You may submit your application:

  • In person at the Government Office for the Support and Integration of Migrants, Dunajska cesta 167, 1000 Ljubljana, during office hours. 
  • By post to: Urad Vlade Republike Slovenije za oskrbo in integracijo migrantov, Cesta v Gorice 15, 1000 Ljubljana.
